Online Retailer SmartBargains Raises $10 Million More in Venture Capital - Boston, MA

SmartBargains, a Boston-based, online retailer of "off-price" merchandise, has raised $10 million of venture capital from its existing investors, closing out a total $28 million commitment from the group, the company announced on Tuesday. The investment group is led by Highland Capital Partners, Maveron, Gordon Brothers, Time Warner, General Catalyst and New England Development. In addition to the venture capital round, SmartBargains said that it has entered into a long-term line of credit with Wells Fargo Retail Finance that provides up to $20 million. Launched in 2000, SmartBargains offers apparel, electronics, jewelry, home goods, and other merchandise at up to 70% off retail value.

HiWired Raises $5 Million in First Rd - Needham, MA

HiWired, a Needham-based provider of remote technology management services for homes and small offices, has raised a $5 million in its first round of venture capital, co-led by Kodiak Venture Partners and Sigma Partners. Founded in 2004, HiWired partners with electronics manufacturers, retailers and Internet providers to offer remote technology management services to consumers and small businesses. The company's products use Internet technologies to install, maintain and monitor PCs, peripherals, wireless networks, and most hardware and software.

Kayak.com Raises $11.5 Million in Third Round of Venture Capital - Norwalk, CT

Kayak.com, a Norwalk-based travel search engine company, has raised $11.5 million in its third round of venture capital, led by Accel Partners. Kayak.com's website searches more than 100 travel sites, providing prices and itineraries for hundreds of airlines, about 115,000 hotels and all leading rental car companies. The company said it will use the new investment to fund extensive offline and online marketing campaigns, launching this June and for European expansion scheduled for the fall. BabyZone.com, an online publisher targeting new and expecting mothers, has been acquired by Kaboose, an online media publisher focusing on mothers and children, for $22 million in cash, plus 2 million Kaboose warrants. BabyZone shareholders may receive further earn-out payments based on pre-determined operating targets in 2006 and 2007. The company had revenue of $4.27 million in 2005, a 69% growth over 2004, and a profit of $1.47 million, an 88% growth.
