ClearForest acquired by Reuters - Waltham, MA

Reuters said it has reached a deal to acquire the outstanding shares of Waltham business-information software maker ClearForest Ltd. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. ClearForest develops a tagging platform and analytic software for customers to extract business information from large amounts of text content. The company reported gross assets of $3.8 million in December 2006.

New York-based Reuters plans to retain and continue to work with ClearForest's management team and its employees in the United States and Israel. It also plans to continue to support existing products and customers, company officials said.

Ellacoya Networks, a Merrimack-based provider of carrier-grade broadband service optimization technology, on Thursday announced that it has raised $13 in a round of venture capital. The funding was provided by Ellacoya's syndicate of existing investors, including Atlas Venture, Bell Canada Enterprises Capital, Canaan Partners, Lightspeed Venture Partners and Presidio Venture Partners. Ellacoya's "deep packet inspection" technology is designed to give broadband service providers visibility and control in optimizing Internet services for their subscribers.

EMC's VMWare Subsidiary Files to Raise $100 Million in IPO - Hopkinton, MA

VMWare, a IT management software company that is owned by Hopkinton-based EMC, has filed for its initial public offering of stock to raise an estimated $100 million. Founded in 1998, VMWare offers products that support IT infrastructure optimization, business continuity, software lifecycle management and desktop management. The company was acquired by EMC in 2004. During 2006, the company had $703.9 million in revenue, an 82% increase over our 2005. Its profit in 2006 was $87 million, compared to $67 million in 2005.

VideoIQ Raises $8 Million in First Round - Waltham, MA

VideoIQ, a Waltham-based provider of video surveillance analytics software, has raised $8 million in its first round of venture capital, led by Atlas Venture and Matrix Partners. VideoIQ is a spinout company from GE Security. The company's software is designed to provider better detection accuracy and far fewer false alarms than traditional systems, requiring human response only when "a real event" takes place.

Oracle to Acquire Peabody-Based Lodestar - Peabody, MA

Oracle, the California-based business software giant, said that it will acquire Lodestar, a Peabody-based maker of software designed to manage meter data for the utilities industry. Financial terms of the deal, expected to close in May, were not disclosed. Oracle said that the deal will bolster its offerings for utilities, following the company's recent acquisition of utilities software firm SPL WorldGroup. Lodestar currently has more than 120 clients in the energy industry. Its employees will join Oracle's Utilities Global Business Unit.

MetaMatrix to be Acquired by Red Hat - Waltham, MA

Chockstone to acquire Peppercoin - Waltham, MA

Chockstone, Inc., a provider of customer loyalty marketing programs and stored value solutions, has acquired Peppercoin, a provider of card-based merchant loyalty software, the company said on Monday. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Peppercoin has, since its launch in 2001, received about $15 million in venture capital funding.
