RCN to Acquire Westborough-based Neon Communications for $260 Million- Westborough, MA

RCN, a Virginia-based provider of cable television, high-speed Internet and phone services, said on Monday that it will pay $260 million in cash to acquire Westborough-based Neon Communications Group, a provider of network transport services in a 12-state area from Maine to Virginia. The deal, which already has been approved by both companies' boards, is expected to close late this year. RCN said that the acquisition will expand its network footprint and base of business customers, and has the potential to nearly double its commercial revenue and earnings. The company said that it plans to fund the purchase price with $250 million of debt financing from affiliates of Deutsche Bank. Neon operates a network of 4,800 route miles and over 230,000 fiber miles in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions.

HighRoads Raises $9 Million in Third Round - Woburn, MA

HighRoads, a Woburn-based provider of human resources management software, has raised $9 Million in its third round of venture capital, led by ABS Ventures. Other investors in the deal include Kodiak Capital, Egan-Managed Capital and AH Ventures. HighRoads, founded in 1999, offers software that automates human resource management for employers and their vendors, consultants, and outsourced administrators. Its customers include about 20% of the Fortune 500 employers, among them General Dynamics, Honeywell, IBM, Kraft, Pitney Bowes and Staples.

Athenahealth Files IPO To Sell Up To $86.25M In Stock - Watertown, MA

AthenaHealth, a Watertown-based provider of web-based practice management software for healthcare providers, has filed plans with the Securities and Exchange Commission for an initial public offering to raise an estimated $86.25 million. Founded in 1997, AthenaHealth employs about 550 people and has over 9,600 customers in 33 states. The company had $75.8 million of revenue and a loss of $5.8 million in 2006.

SpaceClaim Raises $13.5 Million in Second Round - Concord, MA

SpaceClaim, a Concord-based developer of 3D mechanical design technology for manufacturers, announced on Monday that it has raised $13.5 million in its second round of venture capital, co-led by North Bridge Venture Partners and Kodiak Venture Partners. Other investors in the deal include Borealis Ventures and Needham Capital Partners. Founded in 2005, SpaceClaim offers software that allows engineers to "contribute to, consume, and share mechanical designs in a 3D digital form."

TA Associates and Rho Ventures Invest in IntraLinks - Boston, MA

TA Associates, a Boston-based private equity firm, has invested along with Rho Ventures in the recapitalization of IntraLinks, a New York-based provider of Internet communication networks for businesses. Rho has been a major shareholder in IntraLinks since 2001, and will continue to hold a significant stake in the company, said an announcement about the deal. Terms of the investment were not disclosed. Founded in 1996, Intralinks' web browser-based system supports the secure flow of information and documents. The company has had some of its best success in the pharmaceutical and financial services industries.

RatePoint, a Westwood-based provider of web content authentication and consumer ratings systems, has raised $6.5 million in its first round of venture capital, led by VentureWorks and .406 Ventures. Prior to founding RatePoint, all four top executives of the company co-founded and held key positions at GeoTrust, a provider of infrastructure services for Internet and telecommunications networks, which was acquired by Verisign for $125 million last September. RatePoint's service helps e-commerce businesses manage customer relationships.

PermissionTV, a Waltham-based provider of Internet video technology, announced on Wednesday that it has raised $9 million in a round of venture capital led by Castile Ventures and Point Judith Capital. Other investors in the deal include Common Angels, CramerOnline, Inflection Point Investors, the Massachusetts Technology Development Corp. (MTDC), SAS Investors and the Venture Capital Fund of New England (VCFNE). PermissionTV offers customizable development and delivery technology. EveryZing Raises $10M Series B Financing - Cambridge, MA

EveryZing (formerly PodZinger), the Cambridge-based spinout of BBN Technologies reports it has closed on a $10 million, Series B financing. Company executives say Fairhaven Capital led the round, with Accel and General Catalyst also participating.

EveryZing reports it plans to use the investment to bolster its growth plans. EveryZing is a media merchandising platform designed to help content producers and web publishers make consumable online multimedia content searchable.

Watchfire to be acquired by IBM - Waltham, MA

Watchfire, a privately held security and compliance testing software company, said the deal is expected to close in the third quarter of 2007. IBM (NYSE: IBM) said the Watchfire technology will extend IBM's governance and risk management strategy. Watchfire's product will be used with IBM Rational software to assist with web application security and compliance in the software development process. Watchfire has more than 800 customers, including several in financial services, government and technology, according to a statement released Wednesday.

Starent Networks' IPO Shares Jump 15% - Tewksbury, MA

Shares in Tewksbury-based Starent Networks, a provider of infrastructure hardware and software products for mobile carriers, were up about 15% on Wednesday afternoon after the company priced its initial public offering at $12 per share. The offering of about 10.5 million shares -- of which 9 million were sold by the company itself and the rest by investors -- raised a total of about $126 million. Starent's technology allows mobile operators to deliver multimedia services to their subscribers. Shares in the company were trading up $1.80 from their IPO price at $13.80.

Tudor Ventures Closes Third Fund at $262 Million - Boston, MA

Tudor Ventures, the venture capital and private equity arm of Tudor Investment Corp., has capped off its third investment fund at $262 million, Rick Ganong, one of the firm's three managing partners confirmed on Tuesday. Launched in 1994, Tudor Ventures focuses on mid- and late-stage technology companies. The firm typically invests between $7 million and $15 million in each of its portfolio companies and most often act as a lead investor. Some of its better known investments, which have since gone public, include Cambridge-based Art Technology Group, North Billerica-based Avici Systems and Tampa-based Switch & Data Facilities Co. The new, third fund has made about six investments so far, Ganong said.
