Online Retailer SmartBargains Raises $10 Million More in Venture Capital - Boston, MA

SmartBargains, a Boston-based, online retailer of "off-price" merchandise, has raised $10 million of venture capital from its existing investors, closing out a total $28 million commitment from the group, the company announced on Tuesday. The investment group is led by Highland Capital Partners, Maveron, Gordon Brothers, Time Warner, General Catalyst and New England Development. In addition to the venture capital round, SmartBargains said that it has entered into a long-term line of credit with Wells Fargo Retail Finance that provides up to $20 million. Launched in 2000, SmartBargains offers apparel, electronics, jewelry, home goods, and other merchandise at up to 70% off retail value.


HiWired Raises $5 Million in First Rd - Needham, MA

HiWired, a Needham-based provider of remote technology management services for homes and small offices, has raised a $5 million in its first round of venture capital, co-led by Kodiak Venture Partners and Sigma Partners. Founded in 2004, HiWired partners with electronics manufacturers, retailers and Internet providers to offer remote technology management services to consumers and small businesses. The company's products use Internet technologies to install, maintain and monitor PCs, peripherals, wireless networks, and most hardware and software.

Tagsys Receives $35M in Venture Funding - Cambridge, MA

TAGSYS, the global leader in item-level RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) infrastructure, today announced that it has completed a $35M round of financing and relocated its global headquarters to Cambridge, Massachusetts. Microsoft to acquire Softricity - Boston, MA

Microsoft reports it plans to acquire Boston's Softricity Inc. to grow its virtualization business.
Neither company provided any details about the possible deal or when it is scheduled to close.

Kayak.com Raises $11.5 Million in Third Round of Venture Capital - Norwalk, CT

Kayak.com, a Norwalk-based travel search engine company, has raised $11.5 million in its third round of venture capital, led by Accel Partners. Kayak.com's website searches more than 100 travel sites, providing prices and itineraries for hundreds of airlines, about 115,000 hotels and all leading rental car companies. The company said it will use the new investment to fund extensive offline and online marketing campaigns, launching this June and for European expansion scheduled for the fall. Kayak.com's other investors include Sequoia Capital, America Online, Inc. and General Catalyst Partners.

GameLogic has received $3M of debt financing - Waltham, MA

Startup GameLogic has received $3 million of debt financing from Hercules Technology Growth Capital Inc., the company said on Thursday.

GameLogic, founders of Virtual Play™ gaming platforms for lotteries and casinos, announced that it has received $3.0 million of debt financing from Hercules Technology Growth Capital, Inc. (NASDAQ: HTGC), a leading specialty finance company providing venture capital and private equity backed technology and life science companies with debt and equity growth capital.


Metatomix Raises $11.3M in VC Funding - Waltham, MA

Metatomix, a Waltham-based provider of software development tools, has raised $11.3 million in venture capital. Investors in the deal include Battelle Ventures, North Hill Ventures, Apex Venture Partners, Velocity Equity Partners and Equity Resources Group. Founded in 2000, Metatomix develops business software applications based on "semantic composite" technology.

BabyZone.com Acquired for $22 Million - Newton, MA

BabyZone.com, an online publisher targeting new and expecting mothers, has been acquired by Kaboose, an online media publisher focusing on mothers and children, for $22 million in cash, plus 2 million Kaboose warrants. BabyZone shareholders may receive further earn-out payments based on pre-determined operating targets in 2006 and 2007. The company had revenue of $4.27 million in 2005, a 69% growth over 2004, and a profit of $1.47 million, an 88% growth. Its customers include Proctor & Gamble, Kimberly Clark, Gerber, Nestle, Fisher-Price, Kodak, GlaxoSmithKline, Disney and Gap Inc.

BabyZone.com is being acquired by Kaboose for $22M - Newton, MA

BabyZone.com, Inc. is being acquired by Kaboose, Inc. for $22 million. BabyZone runs a pregnancy and parenting Web portal from its headquarters in Newton, Mass. The company had $4.3 million in revenue last year, and in a recent interview indicated it expects sales of $8 million this year. aboose is an online family media company based in Toronto, and lists its shares on the Toronto Stock Exchange under the symbol KAB.
