Symantec Acquires Lexington-based Revivio for $20 Million - Lexington, MA

Symantec, the California-based provider of IT security products, has acquired Revivio, a privately held, Lexington-based provider of continuous data protection technology, for a reported $20 million. Symantec plans to integrate Revivio's technology into its "NetBackup" product next year. Charles River Ventures, Flagship Ventures, Bessemer Venture Partners, The Nomura Group and Globespan Capital Partners are among the investors that backed Revivio with an estimated $55 million since the company's founding in 2001. The company employs about 55 people.

iSkoot Raises $6.2 Million in First Round - Cambridge, MA

iSkoot, a Cambridge-based developer of software that connects cell phones to Internet phone services, has raised $6.2 million in its first round of venture capital, led by Khosla Ventures, according to a report by Private Equity Week on Wednesday. Currently, iSkoot's phone application and network support the Skype service, but the company said it will be expanding support to new platforms and services, including Google Talk and Yahoo Messenger.

Zipcar Raises $25 Million - Cambridge, MA

Zipcar, the Cambridge-based provider of car-sharing services, has raised $25 million in a venture capital deal led by Greylock Partners. In connection with the financing, the company announced on Wednesday that it is launching its service in London. Zipcar members can reserve automobiles online or by phone, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They have automated access to any Zipcar across North America and the U.K. using a "Zipcard" to unlock the door and drive away. The new funds will be used to "rapidly scale" its business, adding new vehicles and locations in its established markets, while expanding to new domestic and international cities, the company said. Other investors in Zipcar's latest venture capital round include Globespan Capital Partners and Benchmark Capital.

Tangoe Raises $8 Million in Fifth Round - Orange, CT

Tangoe, an Orange-based provider of telecommunications expense management software, has raised $8 million in its fifth round of venture capital, led by North Atlantic Capital. Based in Portland, North Atlantic accounted for $6 million in the investment deal. Other investors in the deal include Edison Venture Funds, Axiom Venture Partners, and other existing Tangoe investors. Tangoe said that it will use the new investment funds to fuel the continued expansion of its managed services practice and its mobile and wireless expense management product offerings.

Gather.com Raises $10 Million from Hearst, McGraw-Hill, Pilot House - Boston, MA

Gather.com, the Boston-based operator of a social networking website, has raised $10 million in a round of venture capital led by Pilot House Ventures. Other investors in the deal include Hearst Corp., The McGraw-Hill Cos. Jack Connors, chairman of Hill Holliday and Gather.com CEO Tom Gerace. Gather.com targets "a highly educated, higher informed adult audience membership, a demographic elusive to most social networking sites," the company said.

Optaros Raises $12.5 Million in Second Round - Boston, MA

Optaros, a Boston-based consulting and systems integration firm focusing on Internet applications, has raised $12.5 million in its second round of venture capital, Private Equity Week reported on Thursday, citing a regulatory filing. Globespan Capital Partners led the investment, according to the report. Optaros offers systems integration based on open source software and open standards. The firm was founded in 2004 and received initial funding from Charles River Ventures.

Reddit acquired by Wired Digital - Boston, MA

Wired Digital, the online home of Wired magazine and Wired News, has acquired Reddit.com, a social aggregation news site that lets its users rank web content, the company said this week.Reddit.com, which is based in Boston. will relocate to San Francisco where Wired magazine is based. Reddit's four founders will direct Reddit as Wired Digital employees. Wired plans to build Reddit as an independent company in collaboration with Wired. Wired's parent company is Conde Nast.

MTV Networks aquires Harmonix Music Systems - Cambridge, MA

MTV Networks, a unit of New York-based Viacom, has completed its $175 million acquisition of Harmonix Music Systems, a Cambridge-based developer of the PlayStation 2 Guitar Hero and other music gaming titles. Harmonix was founded in 1995 by Alex Rigopulos (CEO) and Eran Egozy (CTO), who met while working in the computer music group at the MIT Media Laboratory. The company specializes in music-based games.

Charles River Ventures (CRV), a Waltham-based venture capital firm, announced on Wednesday that it has launched a seed funding program "designed to help entrepreneurs prototype and launch new ideas quickly." Called "CRV QuickStart," the program will make loans of up to $250,000 to very early stage businesses, allowing them to avoid equity dilution as they explore the potential for raising venture capital, CRV said. VFA Inc., a Boston-based provider of software for facilities capital planning and asset management, has raised $3 million in its fourth round of venture capital, led by Edison Venture Fund, which invested $1.8 million in the deal. The other $1.2 million came from private individual investors. Edison Venture Fund now has invested a total of $8.3 million in VFA, which offers facility assessment services, web-based software, and business consulting services.
